THE DISCIPLINED CHILD -

The Obsessive-Compulsive Personality

THE WOUNDED SELF

How to work with the Obsessive-Compulsive Personality

The person with an obsessive compulsive personality is sometimes called a Responsible Workaholic.  They make good managers and are conscientious and responsible.  They are neat and well groomed and become pillars of society, model citizens who want to be perfect and do everything right.  Their strictly, rule bound parents will have punished them for any form of spontaneous, free expression, particularly if it is to do with sexuality and aggression, and this creates a taming and subduing of their vital animal nature.

Suppressing spontaneous feeling, personal choice and the ability to enjoy relaxation, makes for a person who is correct, pedantic, intellectually and emotionally rigid.  People who develop an obsessive compulsive personality are driven by an inner demand for perfection which causes procrastination and an inability to complete a task.  This simultaneously creates a fear of failure because of getting things wrong.  Beneath this lurks a great anxiety, obsessive thoughts, sadistic and erotic fantasies, and compulsive behaviours.  When we meet this person we are struck by their ability to deny feelings and we may also sense hostility.

This workshop will enable you to:

  • Identify the three types of obsessive compulsive behaviour

  • Understand how this person became so reluctant to admit to hatred and resentment

  • Understand the need for perfection and complete control externally and internally

  • Learn effective techniques for transforming perfectionism and control

  • Learn effective techniques for helping the client to live their human life freely
