Benefits of Massage

Five million adults consult their GP about back pain each year. According to statistics, one in every two children suffers from lower back pain.

Today's medical practitioners are familiar with alternative medicine and may recommend exploring massage to complement conventional treatment.

Regular massage therapy is a very effective way of managing everyday stress, and can also help:

There is a range of massage styles. The following list provides a brief outline of each:

Sports massage - Deep tissue/muscle massage -
Revitalising massage - Aromatherapy - Indian Head massage -
Detox Massage - Reflexology - Reiki

Sports massage

Clients who have suffered an injury find this form of massage reduces recovery time and restores mobility to muscle tissue.

Regular sports massage can boost athletic performance and prevent injury by ensuring muscles are in peak condition, keeping them strong and flexible.

Deep tissue/muscle massage

This type of massage is ideal for those suffering from tense muscles that knot up and feeling that the body has virtually 'seized up'.

A heavier, firmer massage, it gets to work on that tension and releases it. This deeper level of massage leaves a very relaxed and de-stressed feeling. It also results in far greater movement, restoring muscle function and improving posture and flexibility.

Revitalise/Energise - Swedish Massage

This vigorous massage leaves a refreshed and relaxed feeling. Swedish massage reduces stress and decreases pain, improves blood circulation, enhances the quality of sleep and reduces any swelling.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is gentle, soothing and a great sensation!

This process starts with a consultation to select the appropriate essential oils. Full body or specific area treatments - back, neck and shoulders or legs and feet - are available.

Aromatherapy provides relief from a number of ailments including: arthritis, asthma, depression, digestive disorders, eczema, endometriosis, insomnia, muscle and joint complaints, migraine, PMS, respiratory complaints, stress and tension.

Aromatherapy is for anyone who needs to relax, de-stress or re-energise. A relaxing massage using essential oils nurtures the senses of smell and touch.

Activating the body's own healing ability, it also strengthens the immune defences, improves circulation and starts the process of eliminating toxins.

Stress and emotional problems often cause feelings of being unwell and sometimes depression. Such stress or anxiety can affect sleep and digestion and trigger illnesses such as asthma.

An aromatherapy massage is one of the most pleasant ways of countering these issues.

An aromatherapy consultation first establishes the individual's need and any specific problem areas. The masseur then creates a blend of essential oils tailored to the client.

The body absorbs the oils during the massage, providing a wonderful feeling of relaxation and well-being. Each essential oil has its own properties and many share a common therapeutic action. Overall, they can create a profound effect on body, mind and soul.

The oils will continue to work in the bloodstream for up to eight hours after the massage. To maximise the effect, clients should factor in relaxation time afterwards. It’s also advisable to drink plenty of water to rid the body of toxins.

Indian Head massage

Those suffering from tightness and tension across the shoulders and down the back of the neck will benefit from an Indian head massage, or Champissage. Anyone who spends a large part of their day sitting at a computer will recognise that feeling of muscles that have been in one position for much too long!

Not only does this traditional massage relax muscle tension, but it also rebalances energy flow. Regular treatments will improve circulation in the scalp, which can have a beneficial effect on hair growth and texture. Some people have found a reduction in hair loss after a course of treatments, but most find hair is thicker and in better condition.

Treating the head, neck and shoulders, it’s a 30-minute treatment and ideal as a reviving lift during a lunch break.

Detox Massage

The body eliminates waste products and toxins in a number of ways. The lymphatic system transports waste from the tissue into the blood circulation system and eventually, to the kidneys and bowel. Unfortunately, modern lifestyles often result in the system becoming sluggish and feelings of lethargy.

This massage is designed to reactivate the lymphatic system, bringing the flow and distribution of bodily fluids back to normal and working efficiently.

Reflexology

Reflexology is much more than a foot massage. A trained reflexologist uses pressure applied to specific areas on the feet to restore and maintain the body's natural balance and to encourage healing.

Reflexology can aid a wide variety of medical problems including: back pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, gynaecological problems, infertility, impotence, headaches and migraine, frozen shoulder, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, asthma, insomnia, ME and MS, stress-related conditions and it is a fantastic ante- and post-natal relaxation aid.

BALANCING FEET

Reflexology is for anyone who wishes to improve their general health and well-being. It can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine, or as an alternative therapy for some conditions.

The body has the ability to heal itself after illness, stress, injury or disease, but often it is in a state of imbalance. Vital energy pathways are blocked preventing the body from functioning effectively.

The reflexologist applies pressure by hand - for each client, the application and effect is unique.

Using the pressure points found in the feet, the reflexologist can stimulate specific areas and unblock those energy pathways. This releases stress, tension and toxins from the body.

This is a therapeutic treatment and the pressure is firm, not tickly!

GENTLE HEALING

There are no side effects to reflexology and it is often used in tandem with conventional medicine.

This gentle treatment will encourage the body to heal itself at its own pace. Many people have experienced dramatic improvements over a course of treatments, counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

Regular treatment is advisable to ensure that energy pathways stay clear and function freely.

Reiki

For some the effect of Reiki can be dramatic, for others it is more gradual. A very relaxing therapy, it works on physical, emotional and spiritual levels to encourage healing energies in the body. Most conditions will respond to treatment, including many that are considered to be untreatable by conventional medicine.

Although there are no known contraindications to Reiki, it is suggested that the client discuss the treatment with their GP before embarking on a course of Reiki.

GO WITH THE FLOW

Pronounced 'ray-kee', this is an ancient healing treatment and a natural way to balance the body’s energy. The Japanese word for 'universal life energy', it’s a form of healing based on working with the unseen flow of energy that all living things carry with them.

Because it treats people on physical, emotional and spiritual levels, the results can be powerful, although the treatment itself is gentle.

Reiki achieves very positive results by:

Reiki is not a physical massage. The Reiki practitioner transmits healing energy to the client by placing their hands on or over various parts of the body, starting with the head.

Some practitioners make physical contact, although the client remains fully clothed. Others prefer to transmit healing into the client’s surrounding aura without actually touching.

Many clients report feeling heat from the practitioner’s hands - a physical manifestation of energy. It is very effective in creating deep relaxation, relieving stress, soothing tired muscles and repairing injuries.
