Treat Your Body Naturally

Complementary health therapies offer natural remedies and treatments that don't require the use of drugs and chemical substances. The body is encouraged to help itself - a much better recipe for long-term health!

There are many options available for improved health and well-being. The following provides a brief outline of some therapies on offer:

Kinesiology
Acupuncture
Homoeopathy
Food sensitivity and intolerances/allergies

Kinesiology

Everyone has good and bad days; some when you have energy to burn and others when getting out of bed is an effort. What dictates these peaks and troughs of energy levels?

A Kinesiologist is trained to test for imbalances and discover where muscles are not performing properly, whether due to physical or chemical causes.

Back pain, for example, can be triggered by grief - or by dehydration, fear, food intolerance, fatigue, lack of stamina, lack of concentration or weight gain. It's far more effective to identify the cause of a problem and treat accordingly, rather than take a painkiller in response to a symptom.

BALANCE OF POWER

Kinesiology is a way of communicating with the body to determine any imbalance in muscle strength and tone. The difference between high-energy and lethargic days can be because some muscles are not working as well as they should, leaving others to compensate for their weakness.

A trained kinesiologist will test individual muscles to find out how effectively they are working. Limbs are positioned to disable the body's automatic compensation. The practitioner will apply light pressure to the limb and the quality of response will indicate how well the muscle is working.

Any one symptom can have many different causes. Each treatment will be tailored to the individual's particular circumstances.

Kinesiology looks at the client as a whole - exploring the structural, chemical, emotional and energy make-up. The treatment addresses a unique combination of these aspects, resulting in the necessary action to strengthen the muscle.

SUITABLE TREATMENT

If the imbalance is structural the treatment may involve:

  • Massage to stimulate reflexes
  • Adjusting a vertebra
  • Making sure the cranial bones in the head are moving freely

If there is a chemical imbalance the treatment can involve:

  • Nutritional support
  • Checking for food intolerance

Many other techniques can also address these structural and chemical imbalances.

If the weakness stems from an emotional issue, a range of techniques can help resolve stress or disharmony. Kinesiology is particularly good at integrating 'how you feel' with 'how you think'.

Energy deficiency can be treated by balancing acupuncture meridians and chakra energies. The Coleby Centre's kinesiologist is a qualified homeopath and may consider this an appropriate treatment for the individual.

Acupuncture

This Chinese practice is now worldwide and many converts will testify to its effectiveness. Points on the body relate to and affect corresponding areas of the body and mind. Acupuncture utilises these to create an effective healing system.

Many people are cautious of the idea of this therapy, equating it wrongly to having an injection. The very fine sterile needles are barely discernible to the patient and the healing effects are broader and deeper than the relief of a specific condition.

Acupuncture treats the whole person and the whole person benefits.

ENERGY BALANCE

Having originated in China over 3000 years ago, acupuncture has been adopted by the West and now has over three million practitioners worldwide.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that any conditions - physical and psychological - result from an imbalance in vital energy (or 'Chi'), which manifests as stress or pain.

Stimulating the acupuncture points on the body removes obstructions and corrects imbalances, promoting energy flow and encouraging the body's natural powers of healing.

The Chinese believe that acupuncture uses the body's meridian lines. Recent research has found that it triggers the release of endorphins (natural chemicals manufactured by the body) to relieve pain, improve mood and activate the healing process. The key point is that it works!

CHINESE HERBAL PATENT MEDICINE

Herbal patent remedies can be taken alongside Acupuncture to enhance treatment. They can be use to boost the immune system and can be taken for acute and chronic conditions such as those listed below.

FACIAL REJUVENATION

This technique involves inserting very fine needles (so fine they are barely noticeable!) along points on the face that need rejuvenating. Electro-acupuncture is applied, to encourage fresh circulation of Chi and blood to the face, boosting the supply of oxygen and nutrients and reducing facial wrinkles. The treatment includes facial massage to relax the muscles after they have been stimulated.

Mother's Care

Acupuncture is of particular use during pregnancy, with the following benefits:

  • Supports the mother's overall health and well-being
  • Normalises the reflex processes that regulate the reproductive system
  • Restores endocrine balance
  • Improves metabolism in tissues
  • Relaxes muscles, including the muscles of the uterus, which improve utero-placental circulation
  • Improves the immune system and speeds up recovery from colds and flu

In the early and middle stages of pregnancy it:

  • Stimulates the uterus and growing placenta to ensure a healthy growing environment for the foetus
  • Relieves morning sickness
  • Helps to eliminate heartburn
  • Reduces difficulty with swallowing
  • Relieves oedema - swelling of the hands and feet, and the face.

In the last stage of pregnancy it:

  • Can correct breech or other malpresentation of the baby
  • Lessens anxiety and fear of labour
  • Induces labour where the baby is overdue

Homoeopathy

Often referred to as 'natural medicine', homoeopathy is based on natural ingredients and uses the body’s own natural responses to cure ailments.

For many, this is a more attractive prospect than the use of drugs and chemicals. Homoeopathy is much less aggressive than traditional medicine, with less risk of allergic reaction due to the very diluted state in which most of the ingredients are presented.

Homoeopathy has often succeeded in alleviating symptoms where conventional medicine has failed.

ALTERNATIVE IDEOLOGY

Although homoeopathy is an alternative to the way conventional doctors use drugs, some modern drugs work on the 'like treats like' principle. Digoxin, for example, can both cause and cure heart irregularities.

The diluted quality of the remedies arose from the desire to minimise the harmful effects of the drugs used by doctors. German physician and 'founder' of homoeopathy Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) repeatedly diluted and succussed (by shaking) each medicine to reduce its potential to poison and cause harm. He was surprised in his use of these preparations that the more stages of dilution and succussion the drug had gone through, the greater its potential to cure quickly and harmlessly.

Current research is focusing on the ability of water to retain an imprint of substances which have been dissolved in it. Whatever the mechanism, there is a substantial growing body of evidence that homoeopathy works, is safe and effective.

Most homoeopathic remedies are conveniently presented as tiny easy-to-swallow pellets.

GENTLE TREATMENT

Homoeopathy is an alternative to traditional medicine, which even medical practitioners sometimes recommend as a less aggressive approach.

This therapeutic system has been used for over 200 years and works on the principle that 'like treats like'. An illness is treated with a medicine that could produce similar symptoms in a healthy person.

The active ingredients are given in highly diluted form to avoid toxicity, making homoeopathic remedies very safe. It has proven to be successful in treating a wide range of conditions, often after conventional medicine has failed.

All aspects of a patient's condition are taken into account when prescribing a homeopathic cure, including the patient's personality and lifestyle.

Food Sensitivity, Food Intolerance and Allergies

A high proportion of today's population has developed a food allergy or sensitivity. Many are wheat or lactose intolerant, can’t eat nuts or other foods because they may trigger migraine or cause other problems.

Insomnia, weight gain, constant indigestion, sinusitis and skin ailments are all commonly caused by food sensitivity.

The modern Western diet is far removed from that on which our bodies evolved. Food intolerances can make life miserable. Even mild sensitivities to certain foods can result in performing below par.

By identifying a dietary problem, the specific food can be avoided and the subsequent positive impact on the individual's life can be impressive.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The consultation for food intolerance is part of a very gentle, but highly-effective therapy called Kinesiology. This can determine food intolerances without the use of a needle.

The laboratory used by the Coleby Centre tests for both immediate allergic reactions (IgE) and for delayed reactions (IgG). These latter, so-called 'hidden allergies' have effects that may not show up for hours or even days after exposure.

The laboratory test results are accompanied by a personalised diet treatment plan.

The conditions that can be treated include: dermatological, gas/gastrointestinal, genito-urinary, immune, musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory.
